Fastback Shootout: Although Simi Valley's Sarah Baxter had her 1.92-mile course record broken by Colony senior Xochitl Navarette, who clocked 11 minutes, 18.76 seconds, it was still a strong season-opening effort for the Pioneers.

Erika Barr and Karla Vernola finished fifth and sixth in their senior race and placed in the top 10 overall out of 784 female runners who competed at Mt. San Antonio College.

Barr improved 31 seconds from last year by clocking 11:48.01 and Vernola dropped 66 seconds from last season with a mark of 11:50.41 for Simi Valley, which had nine girls in the top 51 overall.

Sarah Riggs (12:08.54) and Desirae Jones (12:20.48) were third and fourth in their freshman race, both placing in the top 25 overall, with junior Rachel Vinas (12:21.84) in 27th after taking fourth in her heat.

Westlake's Jenny Giguere, who won her freshman race in 12:09.81, was 21st overall, followed by Quartz Hill junior Elizabeth Greif (12:12.71) and Westlake senior Nicki Ghazarian (12:17.35) in 24th.

Alemany's Marcelo Rosales rallied in the final 100 meters to win his senior boys' race in 10:07.30, the fastest local time of the day and 13th overall.

Burbank's Sergio Fraire (10:08.75) was fourth in his junior race and 15th overall, with sophomore teammate Isaiah Amos running the 26th-fastest time to win his heat in 10:17.42. Simi Valley's Frankie Moncada (10:12.80), 10th in his senior race, was 22nd overall.
